The Question

Band 7.5 Sample Answer

Social media platforms have transformed the way people interact, yet opinions remain divided about whether this transformation fosters genuine connection or deeper isolation. Both perspectives have considerable merit, and exploring them fully reveals a nuanced picture.

Proponents of social media argue that these platforms have dramatically extended people's social networks. Individuals living in remote areas or facing mobility challenges can maintain meaningful relationships that geography would otherwise prevent. Online communities also allow people with niche interests or marginalised identities to find belonging that their immediate physical environment may not offer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, social media enabled millions to sustain friendships, celebrate milestones, and access emotional support under lockdown conditions.

Nevertheless, critics raise valid concerns about the quality of digitally mediated relationships. Research consistently shows that heavy social media use correlates with increased feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and inadequate self-image — partly because curated highlight reels distort reality and invite unfavourable self-comparison. Moreover, time spent scrolling through feeds displaces activities associated with robust wellbeing, such as physical exercise and uninterrupted face-to-face conversation. There is also evidence that platforms algorithmically reinforce echo chambers, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives and gradually weakening the broad social fabric.

In my view, social media is a tool whose impact depends entirely on how it is used. When it supplements rather than substitutes in-person relationships, and when users approach it with critical awareness, it can genuinely enrich social life. The problem arises when passive consumption replaces active engagement. Governments and technology companies therefore share a responsibility to design healthier usage norms rather than simply maximising engagement metrics.
