Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The integration of digital technology into childhood has proceeded with remarkable speed, creating a generation whose cognitive development and social experience differ substantially from those of preceding cohorts. This transformation carries both significant opportunities and genuine risks.

Children who engage purposefully with educational technology develop digital literacy skills that are increasingly foundational to participation in the modern economy. Interactive learning applications can adapt to individual pace and learning style with a flexibility that classroom teaching cannot always match, supporting children who struggle in conventional settings. Creative digital tools allow young people to produce music, art, video, and written content that develops both technical competence and expressive capacities. Access to the internet also democratises information: a curious child in a rural area with limited library access can now explore any subject in depth.

The disadvantages are, however, substantial and increasingly well-documented. Excessive screen time, particularly passive consumption of social media and video content, is associated with reduced attention spans, disrupted sleep patterns, and sedentary lifestyles that contribute to childhood obesity. Social development depends heavily on unstructured physical play and face-to-face interaction, and children who spend the majority of their leisure time on devices may develop weaker interpersonal skills and emotional regulation abilities. The risks of cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and exploitation by predatory actors represent serious child safety concerns that platforms have been slow to address adequately.

The appropriate response is not to eliminate children's access to technology but to ensure that usage is purposeful, time-limited, and accompanied by digital citizenship education that builds critical awareness of online risks and the techniques platforms use to maximise engagement.
