Band 7.5 Sample Answer

Technology has fundamentally altered the landscape of education over the past two decades, changing both what students learn and how they learn it. On balance, I believe these changes are positive, though they carry risks that educators and policymakers must manage carefully.

The most transformative impact of technology on education has been the democratisation of access to knowledge. Students anywhere in the world with an internet connection can access lectures from leading universities, high-quality tutoring videos, interactive simulations, and academic databases that were previously the exclusive privilege of those attending elite institutions. This represents a historic expansion of educational opportunity. Additionally, educational software increasingly adapts to individual learners' pace and gaps, providing a degree of personalisation that no single teacher managing thirty students simultaneously can fully replicate.

However, the same technology that can facilitate deeper learning also competes with it. Smartphones and social media platforms — designed by sophisticated engineers to maximise engagement — operate within the same cognitive environment as educational content, and students who lack strong self-regulation skills are easily drawn away from demanding academic tasks towards passive entertainment. Research indicates that the mere presence of a smartphone on a desk, even face-down, reduces available cognitive capacity for the task at hand.

Furthermore, the digital divide remains stark: students in wealthy, connected households benefit enormously from technology-enhanced learning, while those without reliable access face an increasingly consequential disadvantage.

These challenges are addressable through thoughtful device policies, digital literacy education, and infrastructure investment. When technology is deployed purposefully rather than reflexively, its net contribution to education is clearly positive.
