Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The widespread adoption of remote working, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has fundamentally altered expectations around employment. This shift offers genuine benefits for both employees and employers, though it also presents challenges that neither party should overlook.

For employees, the elimination of the daily commute is perhaps the most immediate advantage, returning several hours each week that can be allocated to family, exercise, or additional productive work. Greater flexibility in scheduling tasks around personal obligations improves work-life balance, which research links to reduced burnout and higher job satisfaction. Employees also benefit from the ability to work from locations far from expensive urban centres, potentially reducing their cost of living substantially.

Employers gain access to a geographically unrestricted talent pool, allowing them to hire the best candidates regardless of proximity to an office. Reduced demand for physical workspace translates directly into lower overhead costs. Several major corporations report that productivity among remote workers matches or exceeds in-office performance for roles involving concentrated individual tasks such as coding, writing, and data analysis.

However, the drawbacks are significant. Many employees report feelings of social isolation and difficulty maintaining the spontaneous, relationship-building interactions that define a healthy workplace culture. The blurring of work and home boundaries can paradoxically extend working hours and intensify stress. For employers, managing distributed teams introduces accountability challenges, and creative collaboration — which often relies on informal proximity — can suffer in entirely remote settings.

The emerging consensus favours hybrid arrangements that capture the efficiency benefits of remote working while preserving the cultural and collaborative advantages of regular in-person contact.
