Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The trend towards prioritising STEM subjects over arts and music education reflects understandable concerns about economic competitiveness and employability, but I believe this shift carries costs that substantially outweigh its benefits.

The argument for reducing arts provision typically rests on labour market demands. In economies increasingly driven by technology, mathematics, and scientific literacy, the reasoning goes, students serve their futures better by dedicating time to subjects with clearer vocational pathways. Standardised testing systems that measure performance in core academic areas reinforce this tendency by creating institutional incentives for schools to concentrate resources on tested content.

However, the evidence for the benefits of arts education is compelling and extends well beyond the production of professional artists. Musicianship develops mathematical reasoning and pattern recognition; drama cultivates empathy and communication skills; visual arts build spatial reasoning and concentration. Research consistently links sustained arts participation to improved academic performance across all subjects, reduced disciplinary problems, and higher levels of student engagement — effects particularly pronounced among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The creativity, collaboration, and lateral thinking that arts education cultivates are precisely the capacities that economists identify as most resistant to automation and therefore most valuable in future labour markets.

There is also a deeper issue about the purpose of education that purely vocational arguments overlook. A curriculum stripped of aesthetic experience produces technically capable adults who lack the cultural literacy, emotional resilience, and capacity for meaning-making that human flourishing requires.

The disadvantages of reducing arts education — in terms of cognitive development, social skills, and the quality of human experience — substantially outweigh the marginal academic gains from reallocating that time to tested subjects.
