Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The choice between urban and rural living reflects deeply personal priorities around career, community, and lifestyle, and strong arguments exist for both environments. After examining each perspective, I believe that urban living offers superior opportunities for most working-age adults, while rural areas provide qualities of life that cities genuinely cannot replicate.

Cities offer unparalleled concentrations of employment, education, healthcare, and cultural activity. The density of economic activity in major urban centres creates career opportunities and professional networks that rural areas cannot match, particularly in knowledge-intensive industries where face-to-face interaction and proximity to clients and collaborators remain commercially important. Access to specialist medical facilities, world-class universities, and diverse cultural institutions are further attractions that draw young people, families, and immigrants alike to urban environments.

Rural advocates make equally compelling points about quality of life. Lower costs of living allow families to afford larger housing, less commuting time, and greater financial security. Community bonds in smaller settlements tend to be stronger and more sustained - neighbours know each other by name and social trust runs higher than in anonymous urban environments where many residents never learn the names of people on their own street. For families with children, rural areas offer access to natural environments that support physical development and provide a respite from the overstimulation that urban digital environments increasingly generate.

My own view is that the superiority of urban or rural living is highly age-dependent. Cities serve young adults and ambitious professionals well, while rural areas often become more appealing once career priorities shift towards family stability and quality time. Improved digital connectivity has begun narrowing this divide by enabling remote work in rural locations.
