IELTS Writing Task 2: Technology - Discuss Both Views Sample Answer

The question of how governments should regulate social media platforms has become one of the most consequential policy debates of the digital age, with compelling arguments on both sides that resist easy resolution.

Advocates of stricter regulation argue that platforms currently operate with inadequate accountability for the harms their products produce. Algorithmic systems designed to maximise engagement demonstrably amplify outrage, misinformation, and divisive content because these generate more interaction than nuanced, accurate information. The documented role of social media in spreading vaccine misinformation, inciting ethnic violence in Myanmar, and enabling coordinated interference in democratic elections represents a category of public harm that no other commercial sector would be permitted to cause without regulatory consequence. Regulatory frameworks applied to broadcasting, financial services, and pharmaceuticals all recognise that commercial interests and public interests diverge, and that government intervention is necessary to protect the public. The argument for applying comparable logic to social media is straightforward.

Those warning against strict regulation raise legitimate concerns about who defines the boundary between harmful content and legitimate political speech. Governments with authoritarian tendencies would almost certainly exploit regulatory powers to silence opposition and legitimate dissent, a risk that is not theoretical but documented in countries including Russia, India, and Hungary. The difficulty of content moderation at global scale - billions of posts daily in hundreds of languages and cultural contexts - also means that any government-mandated removal standard will produce errors that chill legitimate expression.

My view is that regulation focused on platform behaviour and transparency rather than specific content decisions represents the right balance: requiring algorithmic auditing, advertising transparency, data interoperability, and meaningful appeals processes, without giving governments direct editorial control.
