Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The question of whether private schools provide superior education to state schools is both empirically contested and politically charged, touching on deep questions about social mobility, opportunity, and the proper role of markets in education.

Proponents of private schools point to their academic outcomes, which in most countries exceed state school averages on examination results and university admission rates. Smaller class sizes, more experienced staff retained through higher salaries, superior facilities, and extensive extracurricular provision combine to create a richer educational environment. Advocates also argue that parental choice is a legitimate freedom in a liberal society, and that competition from private schools creates performance incentives for state schools to improve.

However, critics argue persuasively that comparing raw academic outcomes between private and state schools conflates the effect of schooling with the effect of socioeconomic selection. Private schools draw overwhelmingly from affluent families whose children arrive with greater cultural capital, nutritional security, and academic support at home. When researchers control for these background advantages, the performance differential attributed to private schooling narrows substantially. More critically, the existence of private schools actively harms state education by drawing motivated families, engaged parents, and experienced teachers away from the public system, concentrating disadvantage in the schools that serve the most vulnerable children.

My view is that private schools perform better in part because they select advantaged students, and in part because they receive more resources. Both factors perpetuate social stratification rather than reward genuine educational quality. Societies serious about providing equal opportunity would channel private school resources and teacher talent into a comprehensive, well-funded state system rather than accepting parallel provision as inevitable.
