Homeschooling has grown significantly in many countries, driven by parents seeking greater control over their children's educational experience. While the approach offers genuine advantages, it also carries risks that families must carefully evaluate.

The most compelling benefit is educational personalisation. A one-to-one learning environment allows content to be tailored precisely to a child's pace, interests, and learning style, eliminating the compromises inherent in designing instruction for a class of thirty diverse students. Children who would otherwise become disengaged in large classroom settings - whether because they need to move faster or require more time and support - can thrive when instruction is adapted to their individual rhythm. Research from the United States, where homeschooling is most extensively studied, suggests that homeschooled students perform above average on standardised academic assessments, though this partially reflects the higher educational attainment of parents who choose this model.

The primary disadvantage is socialisation. Schools provide structured daily interaction with diverse peers, teaching children to navigate disagreement, cooperate with people unlike themselves, and develop the social competencies that workplaces and civic life require. Homeschooled children who lack access to sports clubs, community groups, or homeschooling cooperatives may enter adulthood with weaker social skills and narrower peer networks. There is also significant variation in educational quality: the outcome depends almost entirely on parents' subject knowledge, teaching ability, and commitment - qualities that are unevenly distributed. Regulatory oversight varies widely across countries, meaning that some homeschooled children receive an excellent education while others receive an inadequate one.

Overall, homeschooling is a viable option for families with the knowledge and resources to implement it well, but is not without meaningful risks to socialisation and consistent educational quality.
