Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The rise of social media has amplified celebrity influence to an unprecedented degree, enabling individuals with large followings to shape public opinion on everything from consumer choices to political positions. This influence is neither uniformly positive nor uniformly negative, but its balance tilts towards harm when celebrity platforms substitute for substantive public discourse.

The positive dimension of celebrity influence is real. Public figures with large audiences have successfully directed attention and resources towards social causes that might otherwise receive inadequate coverage. Malala Yousafzai's advocacy for girls' education, Greta Thunberg's climate activism, and numerous celebrities' use of their platforms to normalise discussions of mental health have demonstrably shifted public awareness and political attention. Research on health communication shows that celebrity endorsement of vaccination, cancer screening, and HIV testing has improved uptake in populations that are otherwise difficult to reach through conventional public health messaging.

However, these benefits are offset by the larger pattern of celebrity culture's effects. The disproportionate visibility of exceptionally wealthy individuals normalises lifestyles and consumption patterns that are both environmentally unsustainable and financially unattainable for the majority of followers. Young people who measure self-worth against celebrity aesthetics, wealth, and perceived success report higher rates of anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and depression. The parasocial intimacy that social media creates - the feeling of knowing a celebrity as a friend - makes their product endorsements and political positions more persuasive than they deserve to be, given that celebrities possess no particular expertise in either commercial or political matters. Public discourse is consequently distorted towards entertainment values at the expense of substantive expertise.

On balance, celebrity influence is a net negative because its dominant expression promotes superficial values and aspirational consumption rather than the civic engagement and critical thinking that societies genuinely need.
