Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The tension between traditional remedies and modern pharmaceutical medicine reflects deeper questions about the nature of evidence, cultural identity, and what it means to treat illness holistically. Both approaches have genuine strengths and significant limitations.

Modern medicine's primary advantage is its foundation in rigorous empirical validation. Clinical trials, peer review, and regulatory oversight exist specifically to distinguish treatments that genuinely improve outcomes from those that do not or that cause harm. This process, though imperfect and sometimes corrupted by commercial interests, has produced antibiotics, vaccines, surgical techniques, and diagnostic tools that have collectively saved hundreds of millions of lives and dramatically extended healthy human lifespans. For acute and emergency conditions - infections, trauma, heart attacks, cancer - evidence-based medicine offers capabilities that no traditional system can match.

Traditional and herbal approaches offer a different set of values. Many patients report that traditional practitioners spend more time understanding their full life circumstances, treating illness as an expression of broader imbalance rather than an isolated mechanical failure. Some herbal preparations have genuine pharmacological activity and have served as the basis for modern drugs: aspirin derives from willow bark, and the antimalarial artemisinin comes from a plant used in Chinese medicine for centuries. For chronic conditions where conventional medicine offers only symptom management, the appeal of holistic approaches is understandable.

The most intelligent position integrates both traditions selectively: using evidence-based medicine for conditions where its superiority is clearly established, and complementary approaches for wellbeing, stress reduction, and chronic management under the supervision of healthcare professionals who can monitor for interactions and contraindications.
