150+ real discussion questions across 15 topics - with answer strategies and Band 7-8 model answers
How do you answer IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions?
IELTS Speaking Part 3 lasts 4-5 minutes and tests your ability to discuss abstract, societal topics at length. Every answer should follow a structure: state your position, give reasoning, acknowledge a counterpoint or nuance, then restate with qualification. Never give one-sentence answers - Part 3 is where Band 7+ is won or lost based on your ability to reason about complex ideas.
- Structure: Position → Reasoning → Concession or nuance → Restate with qualification
- Avoid simple personal opinions - discuss societal trends, causes, and implications
- Use academic hedging: "It could be argued that...", "There is compelling evidence to suggest..."
- Never say "I don't know" - say "That's a complex issue, but I'd argue..." to buy thinking time
